The Construction of   Postgraduate Disciplines

Regional Economics:

The discipline mainly relies on the Yunnan   Research Institute of Geography. With the process of researching   practice of last 30 years in Yunnan Province, the accumulation of   results, and long-term cooperation with international organizations,   some characteristic areas were gradually formed, namely sub-regional   economic cooperation with South-East Asia, the regional development   under multi-culture, mountain economy and rural development, and   Sustainable Utilization and Management of Regional Resources.   Advanced teaching facilities, field survey equipment, and 3S (GIS,   RS, GPS) Laboratory are in use. The graduates of this discipline can   work in researching institutions of Geography or Economics, start up   business, publicize or report relevant information of certain fields   in news media, and do management work in provincial governmental and   non-governmental departments, and public institutions.

Physical Geography:

The discipline owns the Laboratory of GIS and   Digital Earth, and a excellent team with high academic level. The   main researching interest is Earth 's surface natural environment   system and evolution laws of integrated physical geographical   process. The key researching directions are Mountain environment   analysis, the mechanism, forecast and mitigation countermeasures of   mountain hazards, Rational utilization and coordinated management of   international rivers' water resources, and the relationships between   resource utilization and environment, etc.

Human Geography:

This discipline emphasizes the basic applications   and fundamental researches and has theoretical and practical   research strengths in the fields of Regional Economics, Regional   management, and Regional development, etc. The researching   directions are Regional Economy and Regional Development Management,   Regional Development and Theory, Resources, environment and culture,   and Regional Development. There are 30 faculty members, including 22   professors and associate professors. Moreover, the research funding   is adequate. At present, various types of ongoing research projects   amounts to more than 20 items. The graduates can either work in   governmental, non-governmental departments, companies, enterprises,   and banks or further their studies in relevant universities or   research institutes.

Cartography and GIS:

There are mainly 4 research directions,   Integration and Application of Mountainous Population, Resources and   Environment Geographical Information System, Method and Application   of Remote Sensing Technology, Digital Region and Urban Spatial   Information System, and Plateau-mountain Ecological Information   System. The researches focus on the problems of Plateau and   Mountainous Region Population Development, Resource Development and   Protection, and Environmental Change Monitoring, etc and excavate   the application of 3S technology in regions of low latitude plateau,   mountainous landform, big relative height difference, complex   environment, diversified biology, diversified ethnicity, and   diversified  culture. This discipline owns the Digital Earth and   Remote Sensing Laboratory and a team with high academic level.

Meteorology:

This discipline has Atmospheric Circulation   Numerical Simulation Laboratory, Disaster Research Center, VSAT   Satellite Ground Receiving Station, MODIS Satellite Data Receiving   System, and Southeast Asia Climate and Environment Research Center.   The research directions are Climate Change and Tropical Monsoons,   Mountain Climate and Mountain Disasters, Climate Diagnostics and   Drought-flood Forecasting, and Atmospheric Ozone and Climate Change.

Atmospheric Physics and   Atmospheric Environment:

This discipline has Atmospheric Physics and   Atmospheric Environment Laboratory, Atmospheric Ozone Observatory,   VSAT Satellite Ground Receiving Station, MODIS Satellite Data   Receiving System, and Southeast Asia Climate and Environment   Research Center. The research directions are Atmospheric Ozone and   Climate Change, UV Radiation and Its Ecological Effects, Atmospheric   Aerosol Radiation Climate Effects.

Solid Geophysics:

This discipline was run jointly by the department   of Geophysics in the school of Resource Environment and Earth   Science and Earthquake Administration of Yunnan Province. There are   4 professors, 2 associate professors. 2 of them have doctoral   degrees. This discipline owns Seismic Laboratory, Geomagnetic and   Geoelectric Laboratory, Gravity Laboratory, and Ultrasonic   Simulation Laboratory. The main research directions are Seismic wave   propagation theory, Crust-mantle structure, Earth's interior   physics,Seismicity, and Earth electromagnetics, etc. Faculty members   undertook many projects supported by National   Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and Natural   Science Foundation of Yunnan province.

Land Resource Management:

The main focuses of this discipline are land   resources, land assets, land use, land rules, land protection, land   property rights, watershed land management, and land-man   relationships, etc. Now, there are 4 research directions, Land use   planning and management, Land cover change and land information   technology, Watershed management, and Land productivity potentiality   and land sustainable use. The discipline has the 3S (GIS, RS, GPS)   Laboratory. The graduates can work in departments of land resource,   urban construction, agriculture, and real estate, etc or teaching   and researching units.
