Atmospheric Science

The predecessor of the Atmospheric Science major is the Meteorology major founded in 1971. After 40 years of development and improvement, there were a lot of professionals in the field of atmospheric science who graduated from this major. The department of atmospheric science built up the comprehensive talent cultivation system awarding bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. There are 1 undergraduate major of atmospheric science, 2 degree authorization points of masters on Meteorology and Atmospheric Physics, and 1 degree authorization point of doctors on Meteorology. Atmospheric Science is the only provincial key discipline with degree authorization point of doctors on Meteorology and degree authorization point of masters in Southwestern China, meanwhile, the brand discipline in Yunnan province and the state-level characteristic discipline. The department owns the only Ozone surface-based observing station of WMO among Chinese universities. Furthermore, the department has the climate research center for southeastern Asia, Atmospheric Physics Laboratory, Atmospheric Environment Laboratory, Atmospheric Circulation Numerical Simulation Laboratory, Satellite Ground Station for MODIS, Meteorological Internship Station, Surface-based Automatic Meteorological Observing Station, Comprehensive Laboratory for Earth Sciences and many practice bases(Kunming, Chenggong, Yuxi and Chuxiong, etc).

The department of Atmospheric Science has abundant researches concerning low latitude plateau climate change and the atmospheric environment and regional response, etc. Up till now, 3 research directions of global climate change and and regional response, atmospheric trace elements and their environmental effects, and mountain climate and geological meteorological disasters have developed with distinguished features, which has great influence on relevant fields both domestically and internationally. There are 19 faculty members in total, 5 professors(3 of them are doctoral supervisors), 2 associate professors. Moreover, there are more than 10 guest professors, part-time master’s and doctoral supervisors from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, and Weather Bureau of Yunnan province. In the past 5 years, faculty members of the department undertook more than 20 research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and 3 research projects based on "973" Program and more than 10 research projects supported by Yunnan Natural Science Foundation, publish more than 100 academic essays and 6 coursebooks and academic books, and won 3 ministerial Natural Science Award and Technological Progress Award.

In the past 10 years, the employment rate and the rate of postgraduate entrance examination were all in high levels. Many graduating students succeeded in matriculation to masters or doctors in the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS, Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, CAS, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Nanjing University, Lanzhou University, Sun Yat-sen University, Ocean University of China, Yunnan University, etc. Other graduating students became researchers or workers in different provincial meteorological, environment-protecting and educational departments and technical backbones in the army. The rate of graduating students’ matriculating to masters or doctors have kept roughly 50% in recent years, which ranked high among majors in Yunnan university. With the great demand for professionals in the field of Atmospheric Science growing steadily, this major shows good employment prospects. The employment rate of graduating students keeps stably more than 95% and even reaches 100% in most years.

At present, this major promotes two kinds of talent-cultivation model, elite students' class and ordinary students’ class. Elite students’ class is set up together with the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS, whose aim is to select excellent students from the originally enrolled students and students from relevant science majors, and implement a higher cultivating standard and the flexible teaching methodology. The talent-cultivation is achieved together with the Institute of Atmospheric Science, CAS. Elite students' class comply with the theory-based model while ordinary students’ class comply with the application-based model.

Elite students’ class requires solid foundation for math, physics and chemistry, a higher level of English and more capability of computer science. Students should love the research into Atmospheric Science and master the research methods on Atmospheric Science. Students are cultivated to gain innovative thoughts and become excellent undergraduates in this field. Elite students’ class can provide graduating students who want to further their study with abundant knowledge reserves, great capability of research and huge potential of further development.

Ordinary students’ class focuses more on the stronger practical ability. Students are required to masterly research into meteorological problems with professional knowledge and computer science. Ordinary students’ class can provide expertise for modern meteorological operational work and relevant administration work.
